Senior Data Engineer Location Remote working Cirium seeks an experienced Data Engineer to work in a cross-functional agile team focused on aviation analytics. You bring the skills, energy and business acumen to excel in development of algorithms to source, transform and load (ETL/ELT) large volumes of complex aviation data. You are well versed in large-scale and high-performance database technologies, are responsible for maintaining and performance tuning them, and can act as a subject matter expert. You have a solid foundation in software engineering that allows you to effectively collaborate with the teams that consume and surface the data. You are conversant with AWS technologies, especially the data-focused ones, and are eager to work with them. You are a highly accountable self-starter, able to learn quickly, and communicate effectively. You are able to thrive on diverse, distributed teams that are product-centric. You use your proficiency in all aspects of database administration and design for writing clean, well-documented code which automates the loading and management of mission critical databases. You play an active role in projects from inception to delivery and are responsible for maintaining 10TB+ of data in hundreds of DB tables. Experience and Education 5+ years of Data Engineering (and/or DBA) experience 2+ years Software Engineering experience Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience Key Responsibilities Write and maintain ETL/ELT software to perform automated recurring and ad-hoc loading of data into multiple databases Develop and support software to facilitate database administration (DBA) Ensure uptime of existing databases by monitoring operations, performing periodic maintenance, and being on-call Collaborate with Enterprise Architects and Software Engineers to provide guidance and specifications for new schema and query design. Take responsibility for the implementation and impact of design decisions. Collaborate with Enterprise Architects and Software Engineers to explore new database technology (including proof-of-concepts). Resolve database performance issues through root cause investigation and analysis Support provisioning of new database infrastructure. Take ownership of monitoring its stability Understand complex requirements and translate them into DB designs, working closely with other development team members to accomplish Successfully implement development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews Collaborate with other technical personnel remotely (across US time zones) Operate in an agile development environment while collaborating with key stakeholders Required Skills Deep experience writing production-quality code to facilitate ETL/ELT process automation Advanced SQL programming skills, including query tuning experience, isolation levels, transactional design, etc. Strong problem-solving, analytic skills and attention to detail; able to perform root cause and impact analyses on database-related issues Multi-language programming experience (general-purpose and scripting languages), including Python and Perl. Advanced knowledge of relational databases (physical and E/R design, infrastructure, maintenance, administration) Database server performance tuning experience Demonstrated ability to build processes that support data transformation, data structures, metadata, data retention, data security, dependency and workload management Experience programming software for the Linux/GNU environment Ability to operate in an agile development environment while collaborating with key stakeholders Preferred Skills Experience with Vertica, PostgreSQL, MySQL Experience with Amazon Redshift and RDS, as well as AWS big data stack (S3, IAM, Glue, Athena, SageMaker) Familiarity with CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Deployment) principles, as well as experience with tools (e.g., Jenkins) Experience with change and configuration management tools (e.g., git, salt, puppet, ansible) Familiarity with MPP tools like Spark, Hive, Impala, Hadoop Experience with writing tests and test-driven development Experience in the aviation industry We are an equal opportunity employer: qualified applicants are considered for and treated during employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, citizenship status, disability status, protected veteran status, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.
