Senior Editor ” Election 2020 (Volunteer)

WhoWhatWhy, the feisty, up-and-coming nonprofit news organization, is looking for former high level journalists and editors who want to get back in the game to volunteer their expertise and time to root out wrongdoing in the 2020 elections.

Are you concerned about the state of our democracy? Are you sick and tired of people bloviating on Facebook instead of getting directly involved and making a difference? Now is your chance to get off the sidelines and be the Ida B. Wells of your generation, the veritable Thomas Paine of our times.

WhoWhatWhy is building a brigade of reporters in key battleground states who can investigate voting issues, election security, and the changing landscape of voting in the time of COVID-19. But they need seasoned leaders, veteran journalists who can provide editorial direction and hands-on editing.

In 2018, we fielded an award-winning team that led the way in covering voter suppression and other schemes in Georgia, Florida, and Texas, creating work that set the standard for other news organizations. For the final months before the 2020 general election, and in what is sure to be the chaotic aftermath, we want to go further — to rapidly build a much larger contingent of reporters and deploy them to many more states.

To be clear, we are talking about months of hard work — gratifying and exhilarating work. Also to be clear, we are a nonprofit that accepts no advertising and is not funded by a zillionaire. We are attempting to accomplish a great deal on a very tight budget — so we are looking for experienced editors who are able and willing to serve the public interest pro bono while we direct every dollar we raise to put reporters on the streets.

If you are willing to commit your time for 120 days to help see America through these troubled times, we want to talk with you.

Responsibilities

  • Shape our election coverage, with an eye for breaking news that sets us apart from other outlets
  • Assign and edit stories
  • Manage and guide reporters in a deadline-driven environment
  • Uphold editorial guidelines to ensure quality and a consistent voice, tone, perspective, and copy standards
  • Qualifications

  • Experience as a political journalist and/or editor
  • A passion for thinking hard and digging deep; expansive knowledge of a broad range of election topics
  • An extensive address book and network of sources
  • Ability to assign and edit stories while also independently reporting and writing occasional original pieces as needed
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Expectations

You will work remotely and on your own schedule, but you must be prepared to respond and pitch in to provide guidance and editing whenever the need arises. We also ask for a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week (Though doing more is not discouraged!). Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through Slack and email, and team members are requested to be highly responsive in a timely manner.

    To Apply

We will not review applications that appear to be mass submissions. To apply, send your resume and a customized cover letter explaining why you're a good fit for this position — and demonstrating that you have spent time studying our brand. If there is no option to attach a cover letter, please send a cover letter to hr@whowhatwhy.org. You should confirm your understanding that this is a volunteer position.
