Senior Buyer - Facilities & Construction

Work Mode: Remote

Opportunity

Leveraging strategic sourcing best practices, this role supports Kohler’s Construction and Facilities Management teams with analytics, industry insights, category strategies, vendor management and facilitation of competitive bids. The ultimate responsibility is to secure the best-in-class facilities and construction partners and solutions at competitive rates to maximize value.  This is a critical aspect of the Kohler business, ensuring world class procurement support on key facilities and construction initiatives. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Partner with Facilities and Construction leaders to determine the best portfolio strategy to support Kohler’s growth and cost-containment requirements, execute competitive bids, and secure the right suppliers/contractors and solutions to deliver the desired results.

Strategic Sourcing, RFP Facilitation, and Negotiation

Everyday execution requires confidence, heightened curiosity to dig deep into the business, action-orientation, and effective communication and project management skills.

  • Engage deeply in the business to understand needs and identify opportunities for cost reduction and performance improvement
  • Monitor macroeconomic trends and cost drivers (lumber, steel, etc.) to inform the sourcing and negotiation process.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders to define sourcing strategies that unlock potential from within our operations.
  • Independently manage multiple, complex sourcing events, ensuring the highest standards of objectivity, fairness, and ethics.
  • Use analytics to provide sound recommendations for negotiation and awards.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to identify and capture value through the negotiation process.
  • Guide projects through proper planning, subcontractor selection and contracting of the work.
  • Ensure strong purchase orders and service agreements are executed by including all material/service specifications, as listed on Bills of Material and Engineering drawings, as well as all pertinent commercial documents & SOW’s.

Contracting and Risk Mitigation

This role acts a liaison across multiple parties to, uphold the standards and policies of the company, and protect the company from risk.

  • Partner with legal and internal business teams to standardize and negotiate contracts that secure business value, mitigate risk to Kohler, and ensure  supplier performance
  • Guarantee adequate supplier certification to Kohler’s Standards.
  • Educate clients and recommend steps to mitigate, manage, and avoid inherent risks in the industry and explicit risks identified with suppliers.
  • Protect Kohler and its employees from risk, by assuming responsibility for the best-in-class sourcing and procurement process and compliance to our Policy.

Category Strategy Development

Effective category strategy development is the key to delivering breakthrough results for the business. Through a proven method of gathering pertinent information, this role will partner closely with the business to determine the approach and align on recommendations.

  • Analyze Kohler’s spend within the category to understand rate, mix, and volume trends.
  • Continually evaluate the industry, with specific attention to emerging technologies and solutions, prospective suppliers, and global and local economic shifts.
  • Identify and isolate nuances within the categories to develop a portfolio perspective that balances cost, quality, scale, and capabilities.
  • Identify the solutions and partners that align most closely to our business needs to fuel the sourcing strategies.
  • Present Strategies and recommendations to business executives to secure alignment priorities and business objectives.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with category leaders in EMEA, APAC, and other markets to share insights and leverage Kohler’s scale where possible.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Negotiating

Negotiation is done best through collaboration that identifies and extracts the maximum value while mitigating risks. Strong Negotiators focus on the target, issues and underlining interests of both sides. At a Sr. Buyer level, you should be able to negotiate complex deals with multiple stakeholders.

Business Acumen

Business acumen focuses on two general areas: general business knowledge and specific industry/category knowledge. It is important to understand both to be successful. Sr. Buyers need to understand the categories they support holistically, as well as the external landscape of their categories to drive value for the company.

Organizational Agility

Organizations are complex and have both formal and informal structures. Understanding the roles played in corporate America: gatekeepers, expediters, stoppers, resisters, guides, good Samaritans, and influencers. Understanding how to move through this maze quickly and with minimal noise will impact success.

Learning on the Fly

Solving problems never seen before; trying solutions never tried before; being quick to learn and apply first time solutions are all critical skills. This involves taking risks, failing fast, discarding the past, going against the grain and cutting new paths. Learning quickly and the ability to take previous knowledge and combined with additional information to make new decisions.

Skills/Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations, Business or Engineering, with minimum 5  years of professional procurement experience with 3 years minimum working within facilities & construction field.  Proficient in use of all common computer Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Previous SAP experience desirable
