Full Professor and Director of the Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular ScienceThe University of Miami is searching for a highly accomplished individual to lead the newly created Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular Science. The candidate will also direct the umbrella organization, the Frost Institutes for Science and Engineering, until the Institution determines that both organizations have grown and diverged sufficiently to warrant separate leadership. Candidates are expected to hold an earned Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline and have a bold vision of the future of research in the molecular sciences. Candidates should have a distinguished record of research accomplishments, equivalent to what is expected for membership in a National Academy. Candidates must have demonstrated leadership abilities, commensurate with a position that will have ultimate responsibility for setting strategic research directions, guiding faculty searches at all ranks, creating and managing large interdisciplinary research teams and driving complex funding applications to successful outcomes, while fostering interdisciplinary research in which chemical and molecular approaches play a fundamental and central role. The Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular Science (FICMS) is the result of a transformational $100M gift from Phillip and Patricia Frost that provides funding to create a cutting edge impactful research program facilitated by not only a series of new endowed faculty positions but also a new building for the institute. Support for graduate fellowships, instrumentation and associated infrastructure are also provided. FICMS will bring together scientists and engineers from several molecular-based disciplines to drive collaborative research work. Through approaches relying on molecular design, discovery, and development, research outcomes will be translated into solutions to significant real-life problems. The Institute will combine efforts from existing and new faculty members, primarily from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering, as well as related disciplines in the Miller School of Medicine. The Director will report directly to the Provost and carry out the following duties:(1) Become the key Institute representative and ambassador toward all important constituencies inside and outside the University of Miami. (2) Maintain a highly visible, respected, and well-funded research program in the broad field of Chemistry and Molecular Science. (3) Set strategic directions that will determine the main research areas to be developed within the Institute and guide the institute toward national and international prominence.(4) Guide the search for new prominent faculty to populate the ranks of the Institute. Faculty searches will be run in coordination with the departments and colleges in which the appointed faculty will have their academic homes.(5) Supervise the creation and manage the growth of a research support structure that will drive operational excellence in areas of administration, intellectual property, innovation, research translation, and business development. (6) Work with University Advancement professionals to lead fund-raising efforts necessary for the continuous development of the Institute.(7) Coordinate actively with other Institute Directors within the University to develop research synergies and avoid unnecessary duplication of research efforts and resources.(8) Coordinate activities and funding with the Deans of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering to facilitate high quality research across all disciplines involved in the Institute's efforts, while inserting the Institute as a positive structure that will elevate the research visibility of both colleges within their respective disciplinary communities.(9) As the initial head of the Frost Institutes for Science and Engineering, the Director will frame and lead discussions to delineate the key research areas for the development of new Frost Institutes.Nominations and other inquiries may be addressed to Professor Angel E. Kaifer (akaifer@miami.edu). Applications, including a letter expressing interest in this position and describing qualifications and experience, a current curriculum vitae, and names of three potential references should be submitted to FICMS.Search@miami.edu.
