Job Summary The Department of History is seeking a Student Research Intern for the Fall 2025 semester. The Student Research Intern will assist the Professor on the project This research supports the book In Their Own Image: Homeschooling and the Making of the New American Right , which traces how the modern homeschooling movement impacted American conservatism, with a focus on the role of self-published magazines in building a grassroots political and cultural identity. The project involves digitizing homeschooling periodicals and conducting qualitative analysis to uncover themes related to gender, pedagogy, religion, and politics. Responsibilities: Scan and digitize homeschooling magazines and newsletters. Use OCR tools to ensure accurate text recognition. Apply metadata and organize materials into a searchable digital archive. Use ATLAS.ti software to code documents based on a structured thematic schema. Identify and tag recurring themes such as parental authority, Christian education, anti-statism, and gender roles. Assist in writing thematic summaries and creating visual materials for presentations or exhibitions. Minimum Qualifications Open to Humanities majors only (Art, Art History, English, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Modern Languages, etc.) Interest in history, education, religion, women¿s and gender studies, or digital humanities. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently . Willingness to learn digital tools such as OCR software and ATLAS.ti . No prior experience with ATLAS.ti required¿training will be provided. Job Category Student Assistant Student Disclosure Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters. During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated. Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end. Work Schedule Flexible This is a one semester internship. 10 to 12 weeks not to exceed 144 hours per semester Advertised Salary $18.00/hour Pre-Employment Requirements Criminal Background Check This student appointment may be subjected to a pre-employment background check.
