SCHEDULE: Full-time

GENERAL SUMMARY OFDUTIES:  Contributes to thecompany’s mission and vision by utilizing the nursing process in planning,executing, and evaluating the nursing care rendered by conducting preoperativeassessment,  ensuring that patient is prepared and cleared for surgery.Nursing care meets the standards of the profession, the policies and proceduresof the Center, and is appropriate to the Center’s patient population toidentify patient and family needs.

 

OPERATIONAL DUTIESINCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Demonstrates necessary practical, technical or specialized knowledge and skills required for the role of the pre-operative nurse in accordance with patient care and regulatory standards of practice.
Pre-Admissions:
  • Maintains adequate supplies for the phone calling area.
  • Performs preoperative patient phone calls to conduct preadmission assessments and to provide appropriate pre-operative instructions to patient. Document information in patient chart as appropriate.  **Facilities using Source One Passport or other online preadmission assessment tool will handle pre-admission process in accordance with facility policy/practice.
  • Ensures that H/P is a complete full examination of all body systems and dated within 30-days prior to procedure.
  • Ensures that H/P, orders for the procedure, and consent form are consistent prior to placing in medical chart.
  • Reports test abnormalities and any other pertinent information to surgeon, anesthesiologist, operating room staff, and other pre-operative area staff as necessary.
  • Obtains pertinent patient records prior to patient’s arrival for preoperative testing.
  • Coordinates and/or perform necessary preoperative testing, as needed.
  • Compiles patient chart to ensure that all required documentation is immediately available (consents, orders, H/P, diagnostic studies, etc.)
Admissions:
  • Greets patient and family in a timely manner.
  • Checks patient’s armband and uses two patient identifiers to verify patient’s identity.
  • Receives preoperative physician’s orders and implements accordingly.  
  • Conducts complete patient assessment and evaluation of each patient prior to surgery or treatment. Reviews history, physical, and psychological assessment.
  • Develops plan of care for the patient based on assessment data.
  • Assess patient’s understanding of procedure and checks surgical consent for accuracy and completeness. Obtains and witnesses signature if needed.
  • Participates in the anesthesia time-out process if performed in the pre-op area prior to administration of pre-operative blocks or prior to the induction of anesthesia.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and responds effectively in a calm and controlled manner.
  • Completes admissions checklist when turning care of patient over to operation room personnel.
  • Documents all appropriate patient information in accordance with charting guidelines.
  • Assists in PACU area as needed.
  • Relays appropriate hand off communication to circulating nurse and other appropriate nursing personnel to ensure continuity of care.
  • Complies with principles of hand hygiene, aseptic and sterile technique.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: 
  • Nursing Diploma 
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum 2 year experience inan acute care setting (Pre-op, PACU); preferably in an ambulatory surgerycenter.
  • Additional specialtyexperience may be required as per facility practices(i.e. Pediatric, GI, etc) 
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
  • Active RN license asrequired by state of employment or appropriate compact licensure.
  • Required valid BCLS Certificationupon employment. ***online certification not acceptable.
  • ACLS required.
  • PALS as required byfacility.
