Job Description:


The Operating Room (OR) Scrub Assistant provides support to the surgeon during the surgical procedure on all patient age groups in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the facility. Duties include: room setup, draping, passing of instruments, retracting. This position can not perform the functions of first assistant, ie, dissection or suturing. As a Operating Room (OR) Scrub Assistant, some of your primary responsibilities will be to: 

  • Accurately complete all sponge, sharp and instrument counts. Demonstrates compliance with the current Count Policy and follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies. 
  • Skillful in setting priorities : · Set ups surgical case/ performs duties in logical sequence · Anticipate needs of the surgical team · Appropriately utilizes professional and ancillary personnel · Use critical thinking and sound judgment · Respond to potential /actual emergency situations. 
  • Alter plan as needed : · When consents differs from scheduled procedure · When patient has major physical limitations · When surgeon differs from scheduled. 
  • Be aware of specific physician preferences: · Maintain and update surgeons’ cards · When picking cases, assures all routine supplies are pulled, identifies as needed items · Take initiative to ascertain new surgeon’s preferences/needs. 
  • Awareness and Practice of Standard Precautions: · Wear appropriate eye protection · Report and follows through appropriately on all hazardous exposures. 
  • Care of Instruments/equipment: · Handle delicate instruments carefully · Report dull, malfunctioning instruments · Able to problem-solve, trouble shoot and take corrective action in care of handling instruments · Return all equipment and supplies to proper location. 
  • Check sterility of supplies: · Examine sterile items for expiration date/indicator strip · Correctly inspects sterile items for integrity · Properly delivers sterile supplies to field · Ascertain appropriate temp and time of sterilizer prior to removing items. 
  • Consistently displays behavior that enhances the public image of the organization/department, as evidenced by professional care of patients and courteous behavior toward the public, other departments, physicians and coworkers. 
  • Create / maintain sterile field at all times: · Keep sterile field 12” from unsterile items · Face sterile field · Does not walk between two sterile fields · Does not reach over, touch sterile field · Turn face-face, back-back when scrubbed · Set up sterile field immediately prior to case and does not leave unattended · Identify and immediately corrects breaks in technique · Confine, contains, and properly disposes of contaminated items · Function within designated dress code. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specific surgical procedures: GEN, GU, EENT. Ortho, Neuro, Plastic, Vascular · Requests assistance if needed · Researches unfamiliar procedures · Discusse procedure with knowledgeable individuals. 
  • Demonstrate respect for other's opinion, judgement, capabiliities, and gives recognition and praise to those who earn it. 
  • Demonstrate self-motivation in performing job duties and increasing knowledge base and professional growth. 
  • Obtain specific supplies&/or equipment: · Check preference cards prior to case · Has supplies/equipment in room before case · Make arrangements to obtain special supplies · Check all equipment/instrument for proper functioning and completeness prior · Has a working knowledge of the equipment/instrumentation or seeks assistance · Use supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner. 
  • Perform actions that demonstrate accountability: · Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to change · Respond in a positive manner to constructive criticism · Demonstrate tact and understanding when dealing with patients team members and other disciplines · Practice within ethical and legal guidelines · Seek opportunity for continued learning. 
  • Perform duties in a cost-effective manner. 
  • Properly handles specimens: · Identify specimen appropriately with the physician · Maintain specimens during procedure and checks with surgeon prior to passing off field. 
  • Provide a safe environment for the surgical patient: · Monitor environmental hazards · Report improper functioning equipment and follows through · Perform instrument, sponge, and needle counts as per policy & procedure. · Actively participates in site/procedure verification process · Identifies and labels all medications.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred. 

  • Minimum of one (1) year of surgery experience REQUIRED

  • Experience in an acute care hospital setting required

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification 
  • Skilled in all surgical service lines: Gen, Ortho, Neuro,
  • Vascular,Urology,Gynecology,ENT
