Atlantis Academy was established in 1976 for students who have learning difficulties and are struggling in their current school environment. Atlantis Academy emphasizes the importance of close parent/teacher/student relationships for the benefit of each child. Atlantis Academy offers a program that allows students to discover their strengths, their own unique learning styles and the methods and technologies that work for them. 

Teachers plan, prepare and implement the instructional, educational, and transitional process for each student and young adult enrolled in the Program. This includes, but is not limited to, delivery of instruction, implementation of curriculum materials and educational software, development of daily lesson plans and schedule. Facilitates the training and job placement for students and young adults. Plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates transition education and services.

Position Details:

  • Develops an individualized academic and transitional program for each student by administering formal and informal academic/transition assessments. Uses the results of these multiple assessments to guide instruction and transitional program for each learner and modifies the plans to adjust for the learner’s individual needs. Establishes and communicates learning goals with all students.
  • Facilitates transition programming for students with established transition goals and objectives.
  • Acts as a liaison between the student, Program, parents, and work sites.
  • Networks with all appropriate community agencies, organizations, and/or business partners.
  • Develops and maintains a working relationship with businesses, agencies, and organizations which provide services for students and young adults with disabilities.
  • Monitors student job performance based on student need and established goals.
  • Coordinates the teaching of daily living skills, independent functioning skills, social skills, vocational skills, and functional academics.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to the students’ diverse needs and interests.
  • Establishes and maintains standards for student behavior in order to maintain a safe, secure, and effective learning environment by providing a high degree of structure, clear expectations, and consistency. Implements expectations and consequences as appropriate for each learner as outlined by the Program expectations and/or individual behavior plan.
  • Implements established Program-wide positive behavior supports.
  • Arranges opportunities for non-paid and/or paid job experiences in the community for students
    and young adults with disabilities.
  • Collaborates with teachers, students, and parents to identify appropriate career goals and
    educational plans with measurable post-school goals.
  • Facilitate career and vocational assessment with community agencies, students with disabilities,
    and families.
  • Participate in conferences with students and families to evaluate and modify transition goals on
    an ongoing basis.
  • Identify and facilitate appropriate modifications and/or accommodations within work sites for
    students.
  • Plan, design, and implement instruction in the areas of self-determination and self-advocacy to
    increase student involvement in the transition process.
  • Provide information to families about transition-related education and services and post-school
    options.
  • Establishes a climate that promotes a firm, fair, and respectful environment in the classroom,
    work site or community.
  • Maintains safety of students in all environments (i.e., classroom, work-site, community, etc.)
    through close observation and monitoring through “line of sight” supervision. Utilizes physical
    proximity to ensure safety of students and remains alert at all times.
  • Provides timely, accurate, and professional documentation by recording daily grades/points,
    progress notes, progress reports, report cards, etc.
  • Promotes and maintains positive community relations by coordinating efforts with outside
    agencies, groups, and individuals to extend instructional activities beyond the classroom.
  • Communicates and cooperates with families, relevant external personnel, and staff members;
    ensuring that all communication of information (written and verbal) is clear, concise, legible,
    accurate, and courteous.
  • As needed, transport students to and from the work site.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the Program’s success.
