Support the District’s Office of General Counsel in this challenging and exciting role! The Human Resources Attorney will develop and evaluate strategies for solving legal problems, generate alternative solutions and strategies, and implement a plan of action for a variety of human resources and employment law issues relating to the District's business operations. The Attorney will also interpret and provide advice on a broad range of employment law issues, including wage and hour laws, workplace safety, disability leave, the Family Medical Leave Act, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, workplace harassment, employee discrimination, employee benefits, discipline, and discharge.   • Compensation:

    Staff Attorney: $64,400.00 - $83,000.00, pay grade 116
    Senior Attorney:  $69,550.00 - $89,700.00, pay grade 117

    5% to approximately 50% annual rates displayed. Starting pay will be based upon education and experience.

    Essential Functions

  • Provides advice and assistance to the General Counsel, Human Resources Office, and other District staff on all District employment-related matters.
  • Assists with the development of District-wide policies relating to employee rights and employment requirements.
  • Provides advice and assistance with interpreting and applying District human resources policies and procedures. Responds to claims of employment discrimination on the District’s behalf and represents the District in litigation and other proceedings before federal, state, and administrative judicial tribunals.
  • Provides legal advice and written opinions to various District divisions on applicable employment law and human resources issues.
  • Makes presentations before the Governing Board, District staff, and the general public when necessary.
  • Participates in District emergency management activities, other departmental activities, departmental projects, and performs other duties as needed.
  • Essential Skills

    The successful candidate must be self-motivated and able to develop and evaluate strategies to solve legal problems, generate alternative solutions and strategies, and develop a plan of action for a variety of human resources and employment law issues relating to the District’s operation. The candidate must possess a high level of proficiency in her or his ability to identify legal issues, develop and implement policies and procedures, formulate relevant legal theories, and synthesize legal argumentation. It is expected that a senior attorney can plan and organize work, investigate facts, search legal precedents, draft the necessary legal documents, and develop conclusions and recommendations regarding case assignments with minimal supervision. The position may also include direction to junior staff on methods, strategies, and other legal assignments. 

    The successful candidate must also have a working knowledge of the legal principles that govern the employer-employee relationship, and must be able to interpret and provide advice on a broad range of employment law issues, including wage and hour laws, workplace safety, disability leave, the Family Medical Leave Act, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, workplace harassment, employee discrimination, employee benefits, discipline, and discharge.

    Employee works in a standard office environment. Occasional travel usually during the workday is required. Performs continuous repetitive tasks (to include keyboarding) with one or both hands. Occasionally lifts and carries objects up to 10 pounds. Occasionally requires bending and reaching above shoulder level. Occasionally required to drive automotive vehicle for 2 hours or more at a time. Some travel may be required which may take place during evenings or weekends.

    Employee may be subject to call-in outside of regularly scheduled work hours, or required to be on call, including on nights, weekends or holidays, to respond to emergency management activities or other incidents requiring rapid response in support of District operations.

    Required Credentials for Staff Attorney Opportunities

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Two (2) years training or experience in Employment Law and/or Human Resources Administration
  • One (1) year experience as a practicing attorney
  • Good standing with the Florida Bar
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed
  • Required Credentials for Senior Attorney Opportunities

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Four (4) years training or experience in Employment Law and/or Human Resources Administration
  • Two (2) years experience as a practicing attorney
  • Good standing with the Florida Bar
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed

    This position is typically scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, out of the Tampa, FL office, however work will temporarily be remote. This position is eligible for compensatory time for hours worked over 40 hours, in a week.

    This position is also eligible for relocation reimbursement, limited to moving expenses, upon meeting mileage and program criteria.

    Travel Required

    Yes. Some travel, using District vehicle, within District's coverage area.
