Health and Medicine Editor (Volunteer)

Do you have experience inspiring health and medicine reporters to produce ground breaking journalism? Do you regularly identify unexplored and underexplored aspects of the great health issues of our time?

Do you know how to assemble, manage, and motivate a diverse, cutting edge team ” to help them report and tell their stories with stylish, compelling writing?

If the answers are yes, then WhoWhatWhy would like to talk with you about joining us as a Healthcare Editor as a volunteer.

In this role you will help create and oversee critical coverage of the coronavirus, both the medical and scientific aspects as well as how the government, healthcare providers, and the pharmaceutical industry are dealing with the pandemic. This includes reopening plans and the issues surrounding the creation and distribution of a vaccine.

We are looking for an experienced healthcare editor with a breadth of knowledge of medical science combined with a passion for exposing inequities in the healthcare system and in the response to COVID-19.

We are an up-and-coming, bold, creative, fun, friendly, idealistic, and highly motivated news organization producing eye-opening, honest journalism in the public interest. Our aim is to uncover the stories and angles that the bigger outfits miss or deliberately ignore.

Because we’re straight to the point, we want to make clear that we’re looking for volunteers — skilled volunteers. We’re a nonprofit that isn’t funded by a zillionaire and we decline to accept corporate ads. But as we grow, and dependent on how much you’re able to contribute to our success, we’re open to discussing modest compensation.

If all this resonates with you, and you can commit a minimum of 15 hours a week, working remotely, on your own schedule, with colleagues around the world, we’d like to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and shape healthcare coverage, with an eye for breaking news that sets us apart from other outlets
  • Assign stories to staff and freelancers and solicit diverse experts for op-ed pieces
  • Manage and guide reporters in a deadline-driven environment
  • Uphold editorial guidelines to ensure quality and a consistent voice, tone, perspective, and copy standards
  • Qualifications

  • Experience as a healthcare editor and/or healthcare reporter/writer
  • An inquisitive nature; a passion for thinking hard and digging deep; expansive knowledge of a broad range of health topics
  • An extensive address book and network of sources
  • Ability to pitch and assign stories while also independently reporting and writing original pieces as needed to meet overall content goals
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • You seek to make things better while maintaining the highest journalistic standards
  • Expectations

This is a volunteer role, and you will work remotely and on your own schedule. We also ask for a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week (Though doing more is not discouraged!). Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through Slack and email, and team members are requested to be highly responsive in a timely manner.

    To Apply

We will not review applications that appear to be mass submissions. To apply, send your resume and a customized cover letter explaining why you're a good fit for this position — and demonstrating that you have spent time studying our brand. If there is no option to attach a cover letter, please send a cover letter to hr@whowhatwhy.org. You should confirm your understanding that this will be, at least initially, a volunteer position.
