Project Summary
This is an opportunity to learn about the "back of the house” business side of the National Park Service (NPS). The internship will involve a variety of project assignments in a cross-section of administrative functions, such as property management, commercial services, information technology, and website publication, just to name a few. The exact nature of the internship will be crafted to fit the specific interests and career objective of the intern.
Project Goals and Objectives
Project Goal: By the end of the experience, the intern should have developed a fundamental understanding and deep appreciation of the NPS mission and the agency's business-related functions.
Project Objective: Through mentorship and hands-on activities, this project seeks to provide a meaningful internship experience to a youth with skills and/or experience in business administration and/or public service management. The intern's work will be in direct support of administrative operations with benefit to employees and customers of the National Park Service.
Project Tasks
The internship may involve any of the following or similar activities:
· Build/improve on-line SharePoint database for tracking permit information
· Prepare training program slides, handouts, and brochures
· Publish day-trip travel itineraries on the parks' websites
· Develop tourism materials for use by the parks' commercial operators
· Prepare correspondence and draft briefing statements
· Inventory accountable property and reconcile database information
· Create a SharePoint-based workflow system for task tracking
· Assist with the acceptance and delivery of mail and packages
· Assist with the enrollment and activation of employee identification cards
· Provide administrative support such as filing, coping, and scanning
· Investigate technology conundrums and facilitate problem solving
Place of Performance
The intern will be offered opportunity to work at Everglades National Park (Headquarters Building), the Krome Centre (905 N Krome Avenue), Biscayne National Park Headquarters (Convoy Point), and nearby locations within the Homestead, Florida area. Daily work will generally begin and end at Everglades National Park Headquarters.
Compensation: $15/hour, $40/weekly transportation stipend
