This position requires a valid Class B driver's license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  • three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;
  • any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;
  • a suspension or revocation of the driver's license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

  • Your driving record will be reviewed, and the status of your driver's license confirmed. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful application.     POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order. Performs periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.

     Assist in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed. Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.

    Submits requests for parts and supplies. Operates personal computers and printers for processing work orders. Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders.

    Responds to emergency road service calls and performs minor repairs to vehicles and equipment. Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location. Performs minor welding and paint and body repairs.


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF AUTOMOBILES, TRUCKS, SMALL ENGINES AND HEAVY EQUIPMENT; DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT; THE USE OF REPAIR MANUALS. SKILLED IN: THE USE OF HAND TOOLS AND MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT; REPLACING, REPAIRING AND INSTALLING VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND ACCESSORIES SUCH AS RADIOS, HEATERS, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, ETC; DOCUMENTING WORK PERFORMED AND MATERIALS USED ON WORK ORDERS; PERFORMING PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ON VEHICLES AND VARIOUS EQUIPMENT; CUSTOMER SERVICE. ABILITY TO: OPERATE MOTOR VEHICLES; TROUBLESHOOT AUTOMOTIVE AND EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS; PERFORM A VARIETY OF GASOLINE OR DIESEL REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE; ASSIST IN BODY AND FENDER REPAIR WORK; LIFT 50 POUNDS, CLIMB, SQUAT, STOOP, PUSH, PULL, CRAWL AND BEND; USE APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT; WORK INDEPENDENTLY; FOLLOW ORAL AND WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS; COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY VERBALLY AND IN WRITING;OPERATE AND PERFORM PRE-TRIP/POST-TRIP INSPECTIONS REQUIRED ON COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE (CMV). DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS. 

    OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS: While on-duty status, the position's incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL-Class B) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. During emergencies & natural disasters, incumbent shall be available to work non-standard and/or extended hours. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and experience in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance. One year of experience in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Possess a valid CDL-Class "B" (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
